now tx, plex client and server

Probably the best and most cost effective bit of tech i bought this now tv plexyear is a now tv box! the box was initially 10 pound but they seemed to have added packages like i got a 3 month entertainment pack with it so the box costs 20 quid! – no contract like normal sky and i can add movies package which will cost a tenner a month. Any way its bundled up with loads of sky channels, catch up players for itv, bbc etc thats all cool. the box is simple the remote is simple just rire in you wep key to connect to your wireless and your away!!

Now the extra bit is a simple walk through can add plex client

i got the plex 2.6.9 here

Next, grab your Now TV remote and press the following buttons in order, relatively quickly. If you fail once, just repeat and try again:

Home x3, Up x2, Right, Left, Right, Left, Right

write down the ip address of the box and make a note of it, Next press ‘OK’ on the ‘Enable installer’ option presented and agree to the developer agreement that appears (you have to pretend to read it all, so just hold the down button until its fully scrolled and press ok). You will need to agree one final time on the pop up box and your NowTV box will restart.

Once it’s reloaded and back on the home screen fire up your web browser on your PC and go to the address which was shown to you earlier. If you got it correct, you will be presented with the developer screen. Select browse and select the zip file you downloaded. It should then install and the plex should kick in and you select close and it presents you with a icon on the menu – now as long as you have setup a plex server on your network you should be able to stream music and movies from the plex server .

plex serverplex is available here

its available for mac, linux and windows and clients are available for raspberry, android, iphones etc.

I setup a plex account and when i installed it on the android it can see me plex server from outside over mobile network as the server opens a port on the router automatically for you giving you access from outside from your plex clients – also you can add friends so you can share plex servers!

one note i installed rasplex, its very nice but it didnt work right on my raspberry A – so installed raspbmc and the plex plugin and it works flawlessly. Pretty straight forward when you have raspbmc installed.

  1. Download the PlexBMC add-on repository from here:
    http://hippojay.gith…ddons-3.0.0.zip
  2. Install this into XBMC (System > Add-ons > Install from zip file).
  3. Go to Add-ons > Get Add-ons > PlexBMC Add-ons for XBMC
  4. PlexBMC is a set of two add-ons.
    1. PlexBMC provides the main access to content. Enable it in Video, Music, or Picture (you only need to enable in one location). (This is required.)
    2. PlexBMC Helper allows you to control XBMC from a Plex remote (such as on mobile device or the web). Essentially it causes PlexBMC to appear just like a Plex Home Theater instance. Also required for “Now Playing” support. (This is optional, but highly recommended.)
  5. Once the add-ons are enabled, you can update to new releases simply by updating your add-ons within XBMC.

linux, life and music

My round up for 2013 comes up in three categories as my blog is about > linux, life and music

wardster

Linux, my main operating system and knowledge has been in linux from around 1995. I switched to a mac a couple of years ago and still swear by the macs and ipads, iphone as they are pretty damn bullet proof, but just to closed for me and not my main line of expertise. I switched the iphone 4s for a nexus 4 and the macbook pro 15 for a dell sputnik ubuntu edition 13 laptop. Im almost a year into them both and more than happy with the pair of them. The last android i ran was one of the first google androids and it was far from polished and chewed battery like nobodys business! The nexus 4 has for me blown my iphone out of the water in ease of use and usability for myself, the iphone bandwagon just seems all about upgrading were as im at the end of contract with the 4 and im really not that bothered about the nexus 5 im really happy with the 4 so im going to get two years out of the nexus were the iphone was a yearly thing!. I would strongly suggest to iphone converts to look at the nexus if not the samsung amazing phones. The dell was a big jump from the macbook as the macbook is a workhorse…. im a year in and upgraded to the next OS with ubuntu and its solid, i cant believe how muck linux has come on! ubuntu has more features than the mac for me and is tailored to my needs. The laptop is slick eats the macbook and any other laptop ive touched. The dell hardware is excellent great screen, great keyboard, great build and compact well balanced and light still with a great feel of quality with the carbon fibre bottom and aluminium top and back lit keyboard. Im thinking the main technology that matches and betters the system i was suing on mac which was iCloud is ubuntu one which has work seamlessly for files, music and photo back up from devices, its that good i upgraded the service at 15 pounds per year for 20 gigs of spacea and streaming music to any device which works great. Also google services for calendering, contacts works flawlessly and keep or evernote for note keeping you cant go wrong as you can use the services on any device ubuntu / android mac, iphone even windows if you need to! All apps i require our now available for ubuntu and mainly all from the app centre. Take a look if your looking at a mac / windows alternate.

No matter what flavour be ubuntu, red hat or android – linux is linux

Life, life is good and been through some major changes in the past 6 months which i dont feel i need to go to far into but im happy and this past 6 month has given me time to realise who are friends and who are the people i love. Things and time change and you have to look at a person as a individual and think about what’s best for them thats when you realise that we all have a life and you should think long and hard before just condemning and blaming somebody.  Any way im great and have taken time to realise the people who are dont need and people who i could never integrate and trust again, it seem a shame that some of the people that have been in my life for so long will not be part of my life anymore from 2014 i can only wish them all the best for the new year and the rest of there lives. One thing is i know im fully dedicated to music now and learnt a lot about myself and people around me recently and i just take each day as it comes as you never know what can happen from one day to the next. All i can say keep true to yourself, keep respectful and focused and love the ones who love you and think about you.

xx peace for the new year and great prospects xx

Music, well im full on playing guitar full time and vocal fronting up my band rubber soul which has forked of to a acoustic duo called revival. I love both outfits as the band just runs hassle free and love the music and professionalism and true loyalty  im music and friendship within the band. The acoustic duo just has space that we just love no backing tracks just pure acoustic guitar and bass and vocal harmonies to show of the real musicianship between us. Im really happy i took up guitar and slide guitar last year and plan to move forward next year with a load of new songs for both outfits and going to finish of my own album which ive layed down most of the base of the songs already!! keep your ears peeled….

I love bealtles, blues, 60’s and rock and roll and jimi hendrix

nexus 4 and 7

nexusesthe iPad 2 was gathering a bit of dust mainly because of the lack of being able to connect external devices such as hardisks and mouse. I sold the iPad off and got myself the nexus 7 32gig with wifi and 3G. I got optional extras leather case with built in keyboard and break out cable for usb devices. Im currently waiting for a small bluetooth mouse which will come in really handy. The hardward quility is amazing and the screen is lovely to look at. The tablet is really responsive and a breeze to setup. When i firs powered it on it asked me a few questions including my google account details which setup sync for my contacts and calendars and notes using google services. I used the google play app to install all my apps that i needed and amazingly only had to pay for one or two! Now the first day i got it i used it for a full day and the battery lasted the full day which i was really happy with. Ive took the device to work with me and used it for general IT work including team viewer to fix remote servers and it works great! I was so happy with the android operating system and how much it has progressed since i last used it a year a so a go i decided to dump the iPhone 4s and get myslef a nexus 4 to match and again got a nice leather case for it and im amazed with the phone, probably the best thing i ever did was loosing the iphone and ipad for the nexus 4 and 7, they are both little gems. Before you get stuck in a apple world give the androids a try you get some lovely features including desktop widgets and loads of other goodies!!!
look out for the nexus or the samsung galaxy devices awesome…

can receive sms and mms but cannot send mms on 02

On the new nexus 4 i wanted to send a group message and this automatically changes the text message to a MMS message but he phone by default doesn’t have the required SMSC number in by default and doesn’t auto detect it so dialing *#*#4636#*#* brings up a troubleshooting/statistics menu page. Dial that and select Phone information and at the bottom you can enter the SMSC (Short Mail Service Center) number. I then clicked the refresh button and update this automatically put in the number required then i simply selected the back button and it was fixed!

raspbian on raspberry pi with wifi belkin N300

  1. Raspberry pi 580 75These commands and actions need to be performed from an account that has administrator privileges.
  2. Download the image from a mirror
  3. http://www.raspbmc.com/download/
  4. Verify if the the hash key is the same (optional), in the terminal run:

    • shasum ~/installer.img.gz
  5. Extract the image:
    • gunzip ~/installer.img.gz
    • (or: just double click the zip, it will extract automatically)
  6. From the terminal run df -h
  7. Connect the sdcard reader with the sdcard inside
  8. Run df -h again and look for the new device that wasn’t listed last time. Record the device name of the filesystem’s partition, e.g. /dev/disk1s1
  9. Unmount the partition so that you will be allowed to overwrite the disk:
    • sudo diskutil unmount /dev/disk1s1
    • (or: open Disk Utility and unmount the partition of the sdcard (do not eject it, or you have to reconnect it)
  10. Using the device name of the partition work out the raw device name for the entire disk, by omitting the final “s1” and replacing “disk” with “rdisk” (this is very important: you will lose all data on the hard drive on your computer if you get the wrong device name). Make sure the device name is the name of the whole SD card as described above, not just a partition of it (for example, rdisk3, not rdisk3s1. Similarly you might have another SD drive name/number like rdisk2 or rdisk4, etc. — recheck by using the df -h command both before & after you insert your SD card reader into your Mac if you have any doubts!):
    • e.g. /dev/disk1s1 => /dev/rdisk1
  11. In the terminal write the image to the card with this command, using the raw disk device name from above (read carefully the above step, to be sure you use the correct rdisk# here!):
    • sudo dd bs=1m if=~/installer.img of=/dev/rdisk1
    • if the above command report an error(dd: bs: illegal numeric value), please change bs=1M to bs=1m
    • (note that dd will not feedback any information until there is an error or it is finished, information will show and disk will re-mount when complete. However if you are curious as to the progresss – ctrl-T (SIGINFO, the status argument of your tty) will display some en-route statistics).
  12. After the dd command finishes, eject the card:
    • sudo diskutil eject /dev/rdisk1
    • (or: open Disk Utility and eject the sdcard)
  13. Insert it in the raspberry pi, and boot to xbmc
  14. when booted go to settings and add-ons
  15. add network-manager
  16. configure on network manager and select your wifi and insert wep / wpa key
  17. pull the network cable out and enjoy wireless network
  18. i then installed xbmc remote on my android and iPhone
  19. went to system info on the xvmc and network
  20. added my xvmc host by mac address so it locks to the mac instead of the IP address which will change using DHCP.

This works with the belkin n300 which uses the 8192cu module this is included in raspbian version 4 and works flawlessly.

GBN Is Closed. GMN Is Open.

Logo

Im sorry for the few people who were messed around over xmas with URLS. Ive closed GBN as i could not get control of the domains. I need the domain all together professionally not scattered around the globe for reasons of future investments and expanding business. Im afraid this had obstacles and had to move away from the domains and name. I bought new domains – renewed all the licences to the new domain and rebuilt the whole system. The good thing is the whole system only has one bug as it stands after a full rebuild which is getting looked at no rush as it something minor.

The site main features include

  • Social networking
  • Chat
  • Photos
  • Groups
  • Music Uploads
  • Events
  • Vidoes
  • Classifieds
  • Facebook / Twitter Intergration
  • Last.fm / Soundcloud Intergration
  • Mobile Phone Client

Im just re-registering the reviews module and will be integrating today, I’ve never wrote any reviews but will try some this week I have plenty of new musical instruments and gadgets to review plus computer software reviews! So ill give it a damn good go.

Im expecting a iPad client this month and looking at adding some custom fields and upgrading the search system. Im also brainstorming a link sharing system were users can submit there own links that they think may be useful, as i have loads and sometimes forget to book mark them! Getting closer to a google phone blog..

Getting closer to writing a decent blog on the google android linux phone! I like to use it for a good week first to see its real good points and bad points. A few things that spring to mind ..
Major hang up is no on screen virtual keyboard which would be better than flippin the phone open everytime I want to reply to a quick text!
I’ve managed to suss out how to write to my blog through the browser on the google phone ill blog this but it was a real pain!
One big pain in the ass is the charger socket! Try use the keyboard on the phone with it plugged in!! Madness who designed and tested this….
One thing I am happy about is I’ve got a irc client working now and I have root on the phone!! Yes you heard I am root and have busybox installed so I’m at home in the linux box!!!
I have a precompiled sshd and ssh here the ssh works fine but need to make a sshd config for sshd – I have use the deadly telnet service a few times till I configure it.
Take a look @ www.android-unleashed.com

Google – Where is it going..

399First we get gOS – the google search engine the most popular search engine on the internet – next we get google gadgets for the desktop and igoogle – then we get google desktop and google office!! wow they are really going to town..
Thats not it we then get the new chromium google web browser which currently i a massive bit of kit to download to compile on linux! (450 meg) now we also have gOS the google operating system based on linux with all the google tools built in!! wicked but what ties it all together?
Andoid is the answer – yep the new google phone available next month from T mobile – its features are awsome – now tie that in with all the other tools i just talked about could just toe them into the door for being the leaders of all operating systems – if google puts microoft out of the picture at least we will get all this built on linux boxes so we gain security and stability – my fingers are crossed – its on the cards watch this space – long live google.
