google plus test run

just testing out the new google + social networking site…

Google Plus

its early days and can see it being good competition for Facebook as a lot of people like me are sick of Facebook and the shite that comes along with it!

what i liked about google + was the circles part of the site – i can basically drags mates into friends and musicians into musos or drag them into both circles so if i ask people on Facebook if anyone has used a orange amp you get the none musicians saying what the fuk you on about and the general shite you get – were as with circles i post that just to musicians the people who are interested :) I noticed no chat bar at the bottom but i found chat on the side and from settings installed the v

oice and video plugin for my mac which I’m going to test tonight… i like the way that it ties into picasa but i noticed the 1 gig limit on pictures and you have to pay when you go over which might put people off..

i noticed not being able to post on peoples wall direct you can message them or post a comment but just a general hello to some one etc can’t be done yet… i think groups would have to be added but maybe not its quite a popular thing to add to on Facebook but then again twitter doesn’t have groups and that works great.. as long as they don’t start adding shitty games and horoscopes it think it will be good all that stuff puts me off Facebook totally – again its early days so good luck google the main foundation seems great simple to use – clean – fingers crossed.

mac osx lion

lion

Just half way through big network swap out loosing a load of windows boxes and moving up to so nice apple iMac’s. The main target has been shared calendars and address book which has been accomplished pretty easily using the built in ical and address book and spanning sync and a free goggle calendar, also swap the mail into imap folders which has allowed us to drop the unreliable exchange server that needed fixing and also add the expandability of adding external calendar connections onto iPhone and home devices easier.  Also i split the 500 gig internal hardisks into 250 partitions and this gave me a drive for the OS and a drive for time machine to do incremental backups, not a solution for permanent backups but daily weekly or monthly files you require back its damn easy to use and very effective. The other problem we had was sage and solid works. Autocad works native and seemed to work very well just a few bugs on some of the installs which was solved easily. Now solid works and sage I’m afraid i have to include parallels into the picture – basically its a windows install that brings the software into the mac software screen. Now you buy parallels for like 40 quid then you pay for a crappy windows licence – install that then install antivirus then run all the crappy windows updates blah blah blah…. so far the sage products have worked but been buggy and solidworks does work but doesn’t have the edge of running it on the PC. Now solidworks has a native mac osx version coming out sometime next year so I’m afraid there is no option but to bootcamp the mac till it comes out… i did try vmware fusion but had no luck running the software i ill try this again as this could be a solution… please solidworks bring out a native version soon!! now sage well i just realised how dated and yes widely used but craply old and dated software as we have payroll one program – accounts one program and job costing one program which is no longer really supported?…. also only windows native support – bring in quickbooks… I’m just looking at pricing for software and support but to install this its easy drag on drop the software on the mac or setup on the windows box… add the server by dropping it on the mac or installing on windows and your away – not only does it have payroll and job costing and accounts in one program but loads of other features plus support is fast 8-8pm – we rang sage the other day they made us wait a hour and basically wasn’t very helpful telling us they don’t support parallels.. trying to get out of support! ill blog the results and outcome of this…… some of the new features i really liked in the new lion setup was airdrop! awesome! lion was breeze to setup – lovely operating system very polished and great in the work environment – one thing thats annoying and i need to find out how to remove is icons like app store… yes the user needs admin password to install software but the fact is I don’t want them in there full stop… try removing chess game …  you can’t .. ! i don’t want staff sat there playing chess instead of job costing etc! a quick call to apple care hopefully will work again ill let you know….. our sage guy didn’t sam to agree that mac on the desktop at work and quickbooks was the way to go but hey everyones moving the apple way whether he likes it or not! and he don’t like quickbooks because he sells sage? thats hardly working in our interest therefore i can’t trust the guy! I’ve yet to test a few apps to see if they will fit into the requirements merlin for project management and maybe daylite to expand the tasking and productivity …. evernote is worth a look …

anyway i have to say not as bad as i thought but migrating over to a new system takes more time and configuration the what you think – one thing i would advice is get a full list of requirements don’t miss a thing and then setup one test machine and test the environment before you launch! also the end user can be awkward to move across to something new and might need training so look into whats required there.

its defiantly a big move dropping the windows boxes for macs just take your time and get it right and I’m sure the results will be great :)

plex and xbmc client for ATV

just updated my ATV to 4.2.1
anyway i got the the termianl through ssh using the username root and password alpine

echo “deb http://www.ambertation.de ./downloads/PLEX/” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plex.list
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

then i did

apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2
and
apt-get install com.plex.client-plugin

on my mac i installed plex server plugin available here
if your not lucky enough to own a mac or your using a unpnp server use xbmc and a the unpnp source.

im very happy with the new plex update – ive gained fast forward funtion on plex and it resumes now!!

enjoy hackers

if plex is a bitch remove it using apt then do apt-get clean and follow this link

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/20051-plex-client-for-apple-tv-2g/

it worked for me ;)

just getting round to a quick blog…

just getting round to a quick blog… its been kinda without my macbook
although using a normal laptop is pretty shite i like using linux again infact ubuntu has matured hell of a lot lately support for like skype and other proggies like spotify is great to see!
anyway weekend has been a mad one with gigs started saturday at the stonewell with blackheart afterglow at a private party – my mate belly was doing the DJ’ing and the theme was like old skool funk – i loved it !! real funk some shit i never heard real funk is awesome!! band played well – i need to get myself a mark bass or a TC electronic this year as im not in for lugging this trace elliot around anymore :( although its the best and ill never get anything like it im just getting to struggle on my own with the amp and its not very often you get offered a lift with it…. ill keep you posted on the amp i go with :)
played guitar sunday @ the park – bloody great day! i played electric acoustic for the first round and then tried the ricky copy which sounded bloody great! then kicked some ass on the last spot on my beloved strat! great gig!
looking forward to rehearsal with new band this week and the gigs lined up for next week – im just loving music at the moment
im defo going to strip the body for my unlined fretless this week its waiting for me ….
im liking this blogging client in ubuntu called drivel nice easy and lean woks well only a couple of things I can pick it on when adding the site you have to add the url you have to put the full url which is a bit akward if your not a techie it needs a option to say its wordpress and add the last part to the domain automatically as you have to insert this: http://your_wordpress.com/xmlrpc.php
and one the category is a drop down box so you can only select one category? i prefer to add more than one category because i tend to blog on multiple categories so im going to remove it!! and go back to lekhonee!!
