linux, life and music

hello hope your all good, no juicy gossip for you.

Ill be appearing live with rubber soul this saturday night 18th novermber

also ill be appearing live from 7.30pm at the jam at the tavern (scale hall)

and ill be live at the tavern scale hall monday night with open mic night from 8pm

im taking a break from my robert johnson obsession and ive been studying howlin wolf yesterday and today lead belly, im rolling into son house.. i need to spend more time on each of these guys but im hungry like a wolf!……

ive just been through the lyrics ive been writing over the past year and ive got sixteen unfinished songs organised together now and its quite a mix of bluesy, rock , beatley type big of goodies im going to start piecing the lyrics and putting the music over december while things are looking like its going to be quite with work.

i decided to stop using facebook and just to tweet its so much easier less complicated and less time consuming, i dont like what some people write on facebook and people dont like what i write, im very opinionated but i think its better to not have a voice on facebook really, i have a twitter your quite welcome to add me although it is closed and i dont really want to many local people on it as im using it to connect with my children and people and friends in spain and in the music business sorry if you try to add and i dont add you but you can find out about my gigs with the bands and stuff through facebook as i will still promote them on that. My twitter account is @waynepaulward  as i say please feel free to add me but dont be offended if i don’t add you i want to make life as easy as possible.

No news on the raspberry pi apart from im waiting for xbian version one still!

Im going to test steam on linux this weekend the public beta is available for ubuntu and other flavours of linux. ill keep you posted.

On a positive the jam on the sunday at the tavern is going amazing im really overwhelmed by the nice people who are turning out to support the band and really massive thanks to the guest artists, we do really appreciate you coming and making the sundays nights into a amazing night.

Sorry about any spelling mistakes but if you cant understand what it means and you want to correct the spelling please go somewhere else and do it because im not in the least interested in grammar mistakes and spelling mistakes lifes to short for something not so serious because its just random shit about whats happening in my life nothing spectacular just life.

keep tuned in im going to hit the sack and absorb some son house

oh here is the first verse of a track i wrote called  the dark

If the dark take me while I sleep
Tell dark leave no receipt
I wanna leave nothing, nothing
Cause them dogs
Had enough ov me
Yer them dogs had enough of me

changed raspberry pi distro

made a quick change over to xbian from raspbmc

for one i was sick of raspmbc pushing updates to my raspberry and rebooting and it being bricked! and was sick of when i reinstall i have to have a bloody network cable in when ive got a USB wireless dongle on the raspberry so i switched to xbian flashed the sd card then insterted the card into the raspberry straight boots up fast, went to programs and settings and selected install wireless on reboot and selected a 5 sec pauce to drop to terminal which is handy if i want a console! it reboots installs a few packages without a cable being plugged in! asks a few questions and i was on the wireless network – simple easy setup seems very slick. Im still testing but will probably set my second raspberry up using it.

raspberry pi links

people are asking for more information on the raspberry pi here are my links

distros available:

raspbmc – i use this for my media centre, nice install with xbmc installed ready to go, very stable and works out of the box -> http://www.raspbmc.com

raspbian – the main debian distro, again easy install comes with lxde desktop install, very lightweight but useable, i use this distro for running quake 3 and updating my raspberry pi -> http://www.raspbian.org

open elec – a very polished version, again xbmc media centre, i found it wasnt as snappy as the raspbmc setup? try it… easy install, great support -> http://openelec.tv

Want to buy a raspberry? buy a kit from here

If you follow my blog you will see updates and install how to’s, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me, I can supply ready made kits and more information for setting them up around the house or business.

raspbian, lxde, quake and xbmc

i was told this couldn’t be done ! well here you go it can

as raspberry pi with lxde, xvmc and quak3 3

to install xvmc on raspbian you get the latest install from here -> http://www.raspbian.org

and to update to the latest firmware follow this guide -> https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-update

to install xvmc on rasbian ssh into the box and do this:

wget https://github.com/downloads/RB-tomaz/xbmc-rdp/xbmc-rdp.armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i xbmc-rdp.armhf.deb; sudo apt-get -y -f install

I selected yes to auto start as you have 5 seconds to stop it starting.

quake 3 install:
sudo apt-get install git gcc build-essential libsdl1.2-dev

Download the Quake 3 source code:

mkdir ~/src
cd ~/src
git clone https://github.com/raspberrypi/quake3.git
cd quake3

Edit build.sh in quake3 directory:

change line 8 to this: ARM_LIBS=/opt/vc/lib
change line 16 to this: INCLUDES=”-I/opt/vc/include -I/opt/vc/include/interface/vcos/pthreads”
comment out line 19: #CROSS_COMPILE=bcm2708-

Do a ./build.sh

Find copies of the following somewhere (other guides will show you) and place in build/release-linux-arm/baseq3:
pak0.pk3, pak1.pk3, pak2.pk3, pak3.pk3, pak4.pk3, pak5.pk3, pak6.pk3, pak7.pk3, pak8.pk3
From here:

http://www.quake3droid.com/missingpaks.php

sudo usermod -a -G video [your_username]

log out and back in and run -> Run ioquake3.arm

my compiling kept locking up the rapberry

so i got this -> Download the version with sound here.

and tar zxvf Quake3.tar.gz

and it ran perfect with levels!!!!

If you have a edimax mini wireless this works out of the box…

First /etc/network/interfaces. It should have a single entry something like

add this:

allow-hotplug wlan0

auto wlan0

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid “NETWORK SSID” (or wireless-essid NETWORK PASSWORD if WEP)
wpa-psk “NETWORK PASSWORD” (your wireless password)

edimax mini usb dongle on raspbian

edimax wifi

I just bought one of these of ebay for £10, plugs straight into the raspberry and worked with raspbian straight out of the box, installed network manager on xbmc

and search found my access point and put in the sep key and straight on no problem, its not as fast as the belkin at an amazing 300mbps but i get 150mbps

which is ok with me!! works a treat. much smaller profile that the belkin adapter and still has a led for activity. Id say buy one !

raspberry pi upgrade – 1ghz

RaspberryPi

note – don’t try this on a raspbian install it fails and could brick the pi….

  • Installed Raspbian on the SD with the latest wheezy from http://raspberrypi.org/downloads
  • Then booted up the Pi
  • sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade
  • sudo wget http://goo.gl/1BOfJ -O /usr/bin/rpi-update
  • sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/rpi-update
  • sudo bash
  • sudo rpi-update
Reboot and i get the over clock option in the menu to 1ghz
