We held this months lancaster linux user group meeting on the 2nd wednesday of the month this time to fit in with everyones busy schedules! We havent had a meeting for a few months because we have all been to busy hence the change to the second week! Quite a good turn out so thanks to everyome who turned up! Dave brought his open moko and give us a demo of the new OS he had installed which was pretty slick – he connected it to his laptop and updated the phone using wireless from his laptop which worked nicely then he can install the network app and install the updates and proggies straight from the phone :) nice bit of kit

We talked about installing multiple operating systems on x86 hardware – making it triple boot with linux / mac / windows :)

We also discussed various laptops – netbooks and using external devices on the units such as external monitors and keyboards etc.

We also talked about video software and capturing video and audio – i mentioned zoneminder which is a opensource Linux video camera security and surveillance solution. Very mature product – with online viewing of cctv :)

I took a look at a toshiba laptop and used the hotkeys – shift and escape to change the boot order in the bios and kicked of a fedora install – i had to leave before the install finished so ill update the blog to let you know if the install finished ok and the laptop works right!!

we also had a long conversation regarding building web pages and uploading them using a ftp client – we talked about using kompozer aka NVU – cross platform software which can get you bulding web pages in minutes take a look here after the site is finished if you can use various ftp clients I use gftp as its nice and easy and very robust take a look here both items should be installable by apt so i would type apt-get install kompozer gftp  – this should install both apps for you :)

The linux meetings are held at the brittania pub on ulswater road lancaster on the first wednesday of every month at around 8pm – I would suggest adding yourself to the lug mailing list as some months we may change it to the second wednesday of the month if everyone cant make the first!!!!

Please feel free to come along and talk – newbies welcome!! we cover all areas – linux / mac / windows – servers – laptops – workstations – mobile phones!!! come along and join in – good beer & free wifi!!!!!

I downloaded the new jaunty image from ubuntu’s site – I then installed usb-imagewriter wchich writes the image file to a USB key as netbooks dont have a cdrom no need to hook a external cd reader just install straight from the USB key!! wonder if you can do this with windows!! duh!.. anyway booted of the key and the install was a breeze around 5 questions and away we go! 15 minutes laster i had rebooted into the new shiny ubunty jaunty!! all the screen sizes correct during the install which has always been a bit of a problem! Well this was the fastest boot ive ever seen faster than windows 7 defo!! Logged onto the acer aspire – everything works no issues at all!! sorted!

Now on the asus i noticed it was a tad jerky so after a search i found there is a bug which will be fixed by doing a update during the install soon but for now download these two files:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~apw/lp349314-jaunty/linux-headers-2.6.28-11-generic_2.6.28-11.43~lp349314apw5_i386.deb

http://people.ubuntu.com/~apw/lp349314-jaunty/linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic_2.6.28-11.43~lp349314apw5_i386.deb

move into the directory you have them in install them from a terminal typing

sudo dpkg -i *  (as long as there is only these two packages in this directory!)

after the packages install reboot and your away no more problems.

I like the feature of swapping between netbook desktop or classic

Ubuntu is really going for it now ;-)

I havent blogged to much about my shop as ive been to busy doing it really – Basically it was full of crap when i bought it and ive emptied that and got it back to bare walls – I need two large windows removing and blocking up – One doo removing and blocking up – A full new shop front inclding door and window (which is getting ordered this week!) Then a new wall is being fitted to generate a second room which is the workshop – so i will have a customer area – a counter with products – a workshop and a kitchen chill area and a toilet! All the building is fully secure with 24/7 online cctv system which i will be watching from home and a full alarm system with phone dialer and shutters so its tight as duck asss! I estimate 2 – 3 months until launch and am looking forward to the challenge. As ive posted the company is changing from lancaster computers to M & L Computers – Which stands for morecambe and lancaster computers. We will specialise in laptops servers & computers – Microsoft – linux and macintosh – We will provide repairs and upgrades on playstation 3 and netbooks! – we also supply media and hardware and offer a wide range of web services CMS systems – CRM systems – optimisation – blogs – to many services to mention!!!!!!! My knowledge is endless ! need a mail server? web sever ? file server – you name it i build it. :-)

This year is dedicated to my business – im looking forward to the bloom :-)

Ive uploaded my acpi directory to my donloads folder for the asus 701 Eee. I made a slight mod to it to make the machine sleep when you close the lid!! I use kde 3.5.9 with kpowersave and it works great

Here

Hope it helps :-)

If you get into your etc directory and as root
mv acpi acpi.bak
and then
tar xvzf acpi.tar.gz

either restart the asus or
/etc/init.d/acpid restart

Bingo!!
